Last Friday, second graders had their culminating PBL event, EGG stravaganza! Classes, families, and community members were invited to celebrate all of the learning that occurred during the 12 week PBL focusing on the driving question, "How can we design a safe and appropriate environment for backyard chickens?" During the course of this interdisciplinary PBL, students learned about the life cycle of a chicken through egg incubation and watching our classroom chickens grow and develop. There was also a STEAM challenge designing a coop that would provide for the needs of 5 chickens in a backyard environment. Students designed coops, built models, and reflected on the process. Second graders learned about the economics of egg farming and the process that eggs go from the farm to the table, read tons of chicken literature, and enjoyed writing fiction starring chickens! It was truly a learning EGGsperience of a lifetime! ~Helma Lee
The students were so excited to share what they had learned! The design portion of the project, model chicken coops, were amazing. Thank you to our fabulous 2nd grade teachers, Helma Lee, Courtney Perez, and Jen England, for putting together such an engaging learning experience for our students!
